An excellent review for The Other Place from After Nynes blog

The Other Place by Carol Arnall is an engaging and suspenseful supernatural novel, beginning in 1950s Birmingham and charting the life of its damaged heroine Chrissie over the course of several decades, as she battles to isolate and overcome the fears that plague her.

The Other Place has built up a terrific fan following, reaching number one in the Amazon Kindle Best Seller list for Supernatural and Reincarnation titles. Many of Chrissie’s challenges and conditions are inspired by the author, Carol Arnall’s own experiences; having been blighted by claustrophobia, and at times, sleep disruption and panic attacks.
The act of writing this book became therapeutic in itself for Arnall, who found that her anxieties began to disappear as she worked with her complex characters through their own healing processes. Readers too have praised The Other Place for inspiring them to confront their most profound problems; many women who have suffered domestic abuse have written to Arnall to thank her for helping them to finally vanquish their most painful memories.
Carol Arnall was born and raised in the slums of Birmingham, where the early chapters of The Other Place is set. Arnall read tarot cards, the crystal ball and practiced psychometry until 1987 when a road traffic accident left her severely injured. Unable to work away from home she dedicated her time to writing, at first recording the many ghost stories she’d collected over the years as a psychic.
After having a series of articles published in local newspapers and magazines, Arnall found the confidence to start writing books. Her first title, Mysterious Happenings, was a collation of local ghost stories, which was followed by four other non-fiction books.
In 2007, Arnall began writing fiction, and has since released six novels. She lives in Staffordshire.

Reincarnation

Reincarnation

Reincarnation, according to my dictionary is the rebirth of a soul in successive bodies: one of a series of such transmigrations.
For myself, I veer between totally believing in reincarnation, but logic soon steps in and I tell myself that it is simply impossible to return as someone else. I know that we all live on in our family genes, passed down from generation to generation, a form of reincarnation? Or can we actually live again as another person. Do we really get to choose the family we want to live with? Scientists would tell us definitely not. Who can blame them? What if you make the wrong choice are you allowed to return? Of course not. Once here you have to stay the course. No doubt next time around you will choose more carefully.
What happens if you don't want to come back? Say if you've led (I'm surmising here) a few devastating lives and need a rest. Are you allowed to stay behind, so to speak?
I've read that the more spiritually developed among us move into higher realms. I wonder where they are, and what they do when they inhabit these realms.
I once knew a medium who told me that she had visited a few places where highly developed mediums go after they die, I wish I had asked her what would happen to her family when they died? Would she still see them, be there to welcome them at the end of the tunnel? This medium told me that there were beautiful halls of music and many halls of learning, on any subject you cared to choose.
I've never met anyone who has experienced a previous life. I've read numerous books on the subject, but have remained unconvinced by the majority of them.
There are of course the occasions when you meet someone and ponder on when you met them before. A kind of instant recognition. A medium told me once that this is because you knew the person in a past life. Numerous people when travelling recognise an area they travel through (I've had this happen to me three times) and can point out landmarks and other features that they say have altered. Very strange and it does make you think. It's still not definite proof though is it?
Our dreams can take us into past lives -or so I'm told. I do recall a couple of dreams I've had about places that I've never been to before. I've checked them out and the places and the years coincided with my dreams. That made me think, but again it's not proof.
In my novels, my main characters time travel to other lives they have led. It’s a recurring, fascinating theme with me. It’s easy to believe through the power of the written word in novels that, yes, we can revisit the past (or the future) and discover the truth of our existence.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I felt drawn in and invited into a lovely story with emotional twists, supernatural wonder and family values. I love the way the author cleverly dips the characters in and out a past life. The story really flows. I found this an unusual plot and very good, especially the ending. Dancing with Spirits

I was lucky to catch this scene this morning. The sun was burning the mist off the fields.
This particular field is where the ancient cave is situated. The story attached to the cave inspired me to write my first novel Dancing with Spirits.

The entrance to the ancient cave that inspired my book.

About Dancing with Spirits
A love story that spans the centuries. The story begins prehistory at a settlement in Rugeley, Cannock Chase. A young girl, Elvaennia, goes in search of her missing lover. By a freak accident she finds herself in the 21st Century, and quickly discovers her 'lost love' has also time travelled to this century. Determined to find him, she sets out on a journey that leads her to discover that her family back at the settlement face great danger, and she determines to help them. This in turn leads her into the celebrity limelight. She realises that tough decisions will have to be made. Will the temptations of the 21st Century prove too much for Elvaennia and Deimuiss, or will the old ways and values lead them back to the settlement?

What inspired me to write The Other Place Plus video introduction

For many years, I suffered from claustrophobia that affected my life in many ways. I disliked being in a room without a window being open or the door being slightly ajar. Lifts were out; I would walk up a thousand steps rather than travel in one The fear of being trapped was very real.
Over the years my fear grew, and after being involved in a car accident my fears increased. I found travelling in a car became frightening unless I had a window open. Travelling by public transport became a huge no. I could not open a window or a door due to automatic locking systems.
I remember once when we were out and about my husband popped into a shop while I waited in the car. For some reason he forgot and locked the car from a distance. I nearly passed out and had a panic attack. How embarrassing it is living with this phobia.
If we booked theatre tickets or went to the cinema, I always had to sit near an exit and at the end of the row. If not I didn't go. There were many places over years that I stopped visiting. It was easier to refuse invitations than admit to my phobia. The feeling of being trapped is very real to people who suffer from claustrophobia.
One night I was thinking about writing another book when I thought why not write about a girl who suffers from claustrophobia. Suddenly Chrissie and Babs came into my mind, followed by the rest of their family.
The story more or less wrote itself; Chrissie suffered from claustrophobia because of something that happened to her when she was a child. Chrissie's story in no way reflects my story. Her story is a world away from my life. My phobia was the stepping stone into her life.
I found it helped me to write Chrissie's story. Helpful because I began to understand more about claustrophobia. I was truly amazed at just how many people suffer from it, and I discovered there is a lot of help for sufferers.

  • A lovely book. I'm glad I put it aside (although I effectively read most of it twice) and restarted it from the beginning when I had the time to enjoy it properly. It's easy and compelling to read but the story is deceptively complex and it's well worth scheduling it for when you can really concentrate and get into it.

A few things nobody knows about me.

Here's a few things I dislike.
It's best to get the negatives out of the way first.
People who make false promises. By this I mean people who promise to do something for you and 'forget'. 'Sure,' I hear you say, 'people can forget,' Yes, I know they can and do. But you get to know the ones who frequently promise to do something for you and don't. You quickly realise that they rarely if ever follow through on their promises.
I dislike mushrooms. Fatty food is not for me. Spicy food leaves me cold, actually it makes me ill. I can't touch it..
The smell that wafts out of pubs makes me feel ill. Not that I have anything against pubs at all. They're great places for people to meet and socialise. I worked in a pub years ago, the smell never bothered me then. I find it strange that I now have to rush past them.
People who let their dogs run wild and refuse to put them on a lead when you're out walking. In particular when there are signs saying, 'Keep you dogs on a lead at all times'. I've seen people stand next to the sign and release their dogs. I can't believe there are that many illiterate people around.

Things I like.
Walking in the woods at twilight, this can be a magical time. Particularly when you leave the woods behind and see the sun slipping away for the night.
Seeing the first signs of spring. The first snowdrop, crocus, daffodil. I've seen all these, and this morning I saw the first butterfly of the year - it was an adult yellow Brimstone, and I was also fortunate this morning to see the first bee, and frog of the year. The frog was crossing the path we were walking along. We made certain he reached the other side of the road safely.

Good news. We don't get enough of it lately so when we see or hear any it's great.
Meeting up with an old friend. This happened to me this week and it was lovely to catch up.

Reading a good book.

I'm not keen on watching the television - apart from Time Team. I do enjoy watching this series. It's so interesting to see what they dig up.

One of my favourite singers is Rod Stewart his recent album is one of his best. I also admire Abba, Karen Carpenter and Eva Cassidy. Lionel Richie and Neil Diamond are great singers as well.

It's the small things in life that give us the greatest happiness. Not materialistic things.
A hug, a cuddle, a peck on the cheek. Someone who makes you feel wanted without asking anything in return, is a true friend. These things are so important and add so much to the quality of our lives.

A few marketing tips for Kindle

Marketing for Kindle
Link to Amazon Kindle discussion forum
Marketing your work as any Kindle author will tell you is the worst part of writing! Once you are satisfied your Kindle book ticks every box and is ready to be published a new Indie author will heave a huge sigh of relief and think they can sit back and watch the sales roll in. What a shock when the sales don’t arrive in leaps and bounds! It slowly begins to dawn on the author that something has to be done fast before their book disappears into obscurity. But what can they do?
The press were at one time a little uncertain how to market an author who does not have a paperback book to back it up and for them to glance through. Now they have got used to the idea of ebooks and you’re welcomed with open arms. Although it is useful to have a paperback to hand out. Kindle is popular and so well known presenters seem to enjoy chatting it about it as well as your book.
Facebook is a brilliant marketing tool, invite all your author friends on to it and they in turn will invite their author friends. This way you can discuss your books and see what books they have on offer and where they are selling. Sharing marketing tips this way is excellent.
A blog is a good idea - don’t forget you have to publicise your blog, you can do this via your Facebook Page and Twitter and other blogs.
Twitter is a wonderful marketing tool, and over the years I’ve made many new online friends via this and Facebook.
Have your own website and promote it every chance you get. Try and devote a corner of your site to the particular genre of your book. My books are mainly about ghosts and the paranormal, hence I have set up a Ghost Corner where I am busy putting up different articles and hope to do readings now and again. If your genre is about solving a mystery, you could have a Mystery Corner and so on. Try and keep your website up to date, don’t let it go stale. By introducing something new every week or so people will keep returning to have a look. You can publicise it through your Facebook Page and your blog.
Put links through to Amazon in a prominent place on your site, and also include an excerpt from your book/books and the book cover.
Include a page in about yourself people love to know about authors!
There are free chat rooms on the Internet that you can download to your site an ideal opportunity to meet up with like minded people in a private room.
Above all make your site a nice friendly place where people feel welcome.

Once you have set up your blog and website your next step is to visit Amazon Kindle forums. This can appear daunting and confusing on your first visit. There are after all over a thousand discussion groups. Which one to choose is understandably a mystery. Unless you know the forum etiquette (most new visitors don’t) then it’s so easy to make mistakes and sometimes a few of the posters on the various threads get annoyed when someone flies in and just leaves a link to their book without adding to the discussion! The best thing to do is to take time and read the title of each thread to see what it is about. Look for a self-promotion thread. There are many on the Kindle boards and they welcome new authors. Some threads are titled ‘Indie authors post here. Another might have the heading April (or whichever month is appropriate) thread for Indie authors. Some threads are for the bargain books 99p. It’s advisable to read the first post in each thread to see what the person who’s started the thread wants you to leave before you post.
Once on the thread scroll down to the box beneath it you will see the message (in bold) below when you reach the box.

Add your own message to the discussion
Insert a product link
Click inside the box and say a few words about your book and then click on where it says, ‘insert a product link’, scroll down to Kindle and click on it. On the right hand side type in the name of your book and your name click, when it appears in the bar click again, and it will appear in the box below. That’s all you have to do. Click where it says post and your post will be appear  immediately in the thread. If you need to edit your post, click on the edit button, you can add and alter whatever you want and then simply repost your edited version. Your book/books will be highlighted once your post appears in the thread.
I only post a couple of times a week, normally Wednesday and Friday. It’s best not to over post as a number of posters subscribe to various threads, and they will receive every single post you make. It can be annoying!
Only post in the few self promotion threads. Things constantly change on the discussion boards. Never leave fly by posts of your book or you may well be reported by a poster, and then banned by Amazon!
Our friends across the Pond are very friendly, but posting on their Kindle Boards is different, and I would advise you to read a few of the threads before you post.
There is a Meet Our Author Forum. Do not post anywhere else apart from this forum, should you do so Amazon will ban you.  I host a couple of threads on the MOA Forum join me if you feel like a chat at anytime . Here’s the links. This is the actual Discussion thread. We’re a friendly helpful group of people.
This is a useful link where you can promote your book(s) we chat now and again.

Marketing is hard work but extremely rewarding. The main thing is never to over promote and don’t be afraid to try out new ideas. You'll soon find out whether they work or not.

Blithfield Hall is not Haunted, neither is the reservoir!

I do not have any photographs of the Hall itself. We're not allowed to take photographs without permission. This photograph is in the locality of the Hall. I took it yesterday. It shows the beautiful setting where the Hall is situated.

Blithfield Hall is not haunted
I’ve searched internet sites who report ghostly sightings that I know are simply rumour and have no actual foundation, in fact. One such place is Blithfield Hall in Staffordshire. An Elizabethan manor. It is not open to the general public. Although groups are sometimes booked in for a small tour.
I’ve read that there have been at least five ghostly sightings at Blithfield Hall. From a haunted well, to the sound of rustling skirts, to a man being seen by a cleaner. There has also been a sighting of a woman in the garden.
I wrote to Nancy Lady Bagot asking her if Blithfield Hall is haunted. Who better to ask? She had lived there from the 1950s at least. She replied that Blithfield Hall is definitely not haunted. She did write that one of her friends thought she heard something unusual during the night when she was staying but that it could have been anything.
I have put the letter that she sent to me in the records of Rugeley library.
One site even says that Blithfield is near Staffordshire! Blithfield is in the East Staffordshire.
It is also said that Blithfield reservoir is haunted by the sound of church bells ringing out at midnight. This rumour spread because the land was flooded many years ago to create the reservoir. It is rumoured that a church and houses were beneath the surface of the water. I did some research and in fact it was one house that was flooded, definitely not a church. It’s strange how rumours soon begin and spread rapidly, particularly when there is a ghost story attached to them.

Embroidery projects to do and finished ones for sale.

Blithfield Bird Sanctuary
Beside the reservoir - autumn 2014

This is one of my favourite photographs. Yesterday I made a transfer of it. I remembered to reverse the image before printing it! I had previously prepared a piece of white cotton material, which I  backed with iron on interfacing. I allow at least two inches all round allowing for distortion when using freestyle embroidery.
Before pressing the transfer on I ensured the material was free of hairs (my dog constantly sheds hair, even though she is brushed regularly). I use masking tape to ensure the surface is clear. If a hair is left either between the interfacing, or on the actual transfer when it's on the material it's almost impossible to remove it. It's not a problem if it's in an area that you're going to embroider, but I've found them in the sky before now! I've started from scratch when this has happened.
If you are interested in any of the embroideries please email  carol.arnall@ntlworld.com

Wild flower meadow at Blithfield 2012

Here's another favourite photograph. I'm looking forward to embroidering this picture.
I have prepared the material the same using the methods I detailed above
I will add a few beads to the front of the picture after first embroidering the background with freestyle embroidery and a little hand embroidery.

Blithfield April 2014

I've prepared this picture exactly the same as the previous ones above. The transfer has turned out a little dark so I will use fabric paints to lighten it if the cottons don't work a miracle for me.
I will highlight the foreground with yellow and green beads.

 Fiery Sky £20.00
I painted this picture a year or so ago. I highlighted it with freestyle embroidery and embellished it with beads afterwards.

Another Fiery Sky! £20.00
On the same theme as the above but without the addition of the beads. I enjoyed painting and embroidering these two picture so much I may well do another one.
On the way to Longdon fishing lodge - Cannock Chase
Worked in freestyle embroidery on a transfer.

Longdon bluebell woods - £15,00
I've recently finished another embroidery of this scene. It will be a gift for someone I know. I do vary repeat picture a little to make them individual. This is worked on a transfer from a photograph.
